Re: Are young people lossing ability to read?

Reading develops imagination, reflection, critical thinking and vocabulary. Unfortunately not only children, even university students are facing declined ability (or maybe also interest) to read, and to socialize in a face-to-face setting. Many of the students simply don't have the patience to read long text. It is known that they would rather review the powerpoint slides or watch videos to study, instead of systematically read the textbook.
The declining reading proficiency is also found in adult level.
From this news, the reading skills of American adults were reported to be significantly lower than those in most other developed countries There're many factors causing the decline of reading ability, e.g. too much exposure to TV, videos online and video games, an explosion of other activities that steal time away from solitary reading, school that seek to teach reading with ineffective instructional philosophy and methods. This makes sense. If students are so used to process information through visual media, they do not get developed getting information from reading.
